The memory of our revered father , Theodore the Desert One .
Our reverend father, who was a miser from his youth, left the world, became a monk, and retired to the desert of the Jordan, where, zealous to please God, he labored hard, and for this he received from God the gift of miracles.
And it came to pass during the voyage, when the ship was driven hither and thither, that all the men were weary, and they had no food or drink; and the mariners and all that were in the ship were greatly distressed. Then lifting up his hands to heaven, he prayed earnestly to God, who saves men from their troubles; and he made a sign of the cross to the sea, and said unto the sailors, Blessed be God, fill up as much water as ye need.
And when they had tasted, behold, the waters of the sea were turned from bitter to sweet, as the waters of a river. And they filled their vessels with fresh water from the sea, and all the rest, and they praised God, and bowed themselves to the earth before the old man.
And he said, My lord, I beseech thee, this miracle of the Almighty hath not been wrought for me, but for you, who mourn for want of water: for God, seeing your sorrow and your death, hath had mercy on you, and hath turned the salt water of the sea into a fresh river.
1 The Reverend Feodor went to war in the 6th century.
