In the reign of the pious Byzantine emperor Leo the Great, and his wife Verina, two pious senators, Galvin and Candide, lived in Constantinople. After consulting with each other, they asked the emperor to let them go to Jerusalem to worship the holy places and, having received leave, set out on their way.

St. Juvenal took the throne of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem during the reign of the pious Emperor Theodosius the Younger [Feodosius II (the Younger) reigned from 408 to 450]. During his patriarchate, great luminaries, holy fathers were active in Palestine: Euphemia [His memory is celebrated by the Church on January 20], Theodosius [His memory is celebrated on January 11], Gerasim of Jordan [His memory is celebrated on March 4], whom he served.
