The Passion of St. John the Martyr

This holy martyr came from the pious parents Theoclitus and Theophilus. He was born at a time when the church in the city of Amastris was governed by Bishop Heraclius I, and received his name from an angel who appeared to him. At the age of three years, he, calling on the name of Christ, resurrected a dead boy, who afterwards marched with him and was perfected in virtue. Having reached old age and performed many miracles, he once saw how unreasonable idolaters worship inside an empty bamboo tree.

1 The city of Amastris, now known as Amastra, was located in the northern part of the Roman province of Paphlagonia on the shore of the Euxine Sea, now the Black Sea. 2 The time of the death of the holy martyr Jacinthus is unknown.
